Learning to Sing
Learning to sing can be fun and easy, but learning to sing well can take time, practice and patience. For new students just beginning their voice training, I recommend a program of at least 3+ months of weekly half-hour lessons to get started. A full hour is often too strenuous for new students who have not yet mastered certain vocal techniques.
Beginning Voice Lessons
Starting voice lessons is a great way to learn to sing in a safe, welcoming and friendly environment. I highly recommend for your own benefit that you embark on the adventure of learning to sing by committing to at least six weeks of weekly half-hour lessons in order to learn the basics, build a solid vocal foundation, and allow time to see real improvement. By committing to your vocal study every week and practicing daily in your own time, you will quickly see greater results.
Your First Lesson
At your first vocal lesson, we will spend a few minutes getting to know each other and discussing your goals. I will ask about your experience with singing, the type of music you enjoy and the kind of songs you'd like to learn to sing. In many cases, students come prepared with sheet music, CDs, or MP3s of their favorite songs and artists. This can be helpful in getting a feel of your preferred style of music and vocals.
After the introduction, we will then begin learning a series of vocal warm-ups used by professionals in the industry and that you may or may not be familiar with. When your voice is sufficiently "warm" I will then ask you to choose a song you'd like to sing in order to get a feel of your voice and your style. During the song, I may listen and take notes, or stop you if I sense you are doing something damaging to your voice (a detrimental vocal habit) or if I feel that something can be learned or improved in real time. After the song, we'll revisit your goals, your voice and song selection again to determine the best way to help you enhance your singing and grow your vocal capability. I usually end the session by giving you a few songs to practice and learn in your own time, so that we can continue the work at your next lesson.
Arriving "Warm"
If you choose, intermediate and advanced students may come to the lesson "warm" or already having done your warm-up exercises so that the full session can be focused on your songs. For beginning students and those who choose not to warm-up beforehand, we will do warm-ups together. This is a valuable part of your training where you will benefit from learning new exercises, and practicing techniques and alterations to your current methods.
Late Arrivals
While I do my best to accommodate every student, please understand that where scheduling is concerned it is not always possible to provide make-up time for students who arrive late to their lessons. To get the most out of our time together, I highly recommend that you arrive 5-10 minutes early in order to settle in, get some water, use the restroom and be ready to sing.
Cancellation Policy:
In order to offer clients regular and frequent session times, the studio has a strict cancellation policy of at least 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Any cancellations with less than 24 hours notice will incur a cancellation fee.
